Nalafem is guided by the Africa Young Women Beijing+25 Manifesto targeting the political, digital and offline spaces. Afresist also convenes the InterGenerational Africa Forum (IGAF) which is a platform for intergenerational dialogues and action among other projects. 


We are seeking a skilled Junior webmaster to join our growing communications team. In this role, the webmaster will be responsible for managing Afresist multi-project websites ( including Afresist site, Nalafem site, IGAF site etc..) ensuring that our sites are user-friendly and up to date at all times. The webmaster will also work with our digital team to expand our presence through the design and implementation of new web-based applications that will positively impact our experience. 

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Manage and curate a website based on the WordPress CMS
  • Monitor security and perform necessary updates for plugins and themes
  • Update content to reflect current SEO trends
  • Repair any broken links and fix any reported bugs
  • Maintain VPS servers, optimizing website speeds
  • Contribute to discussions on ways to improve functionality and usability
  • Troubleshooting functionality and content issues.
  • Conceptualizing creative ideas with the comms team.
  • Testing and improving the design of the website.
  • Establishing design guidelines, standards, and best practices.
  • Maintaining the appearance of a website by enforcing content standards.
  • Designing visual imagery for websites and ensuring that they are in line with branding guidelines.
  • Communicating design ideas using user flows, process flows, site maps, and wireframes.
  • Incorporate functionalities and features into websites.
  • Enhancing User Experience (UX) and User Interface (UI)
  • Ensuring website function and stability across devices i.e. desktop, mobile, tablet
  • Expansion of website and website tools into new project subdomains
  • Support the hosting and production of virtual engagements 

Webmaster Requirements and Qualifications

  • Diploma  in computer science, any related field or self-taught;
  • Minimum of 2 years experience in web design or web development field
  • Strategic thinking and problem-solving skills
  • Working knowledge of  (PHP, HTML, CSS and any other scripting languages)
  • Capable of utilizing web content management systems, e.g. WordPress, Drupal, Joomla
  • Experience working with debugging tools such as Chrome Inspector and Firebug.
  • Experience in User Experience (UX) and User Interface (UI)
  • Good understanding of search engine optimization principles.
  • Up-to-date experience with international web protocols, standards, and technologies.
  • Demonstrable experience in graphic design tools such as Adobe Creative Suite, Canva and PicMonkey
  • Creative and open to new ideas.
  • Adaptable and willing to learn new techniques.
  • Excellent communication skills.

Scope of work:

We are seeking skilled Proposal Writers to package Afresist multi-projects engagements preferably with knowledge of Kenya’s landscape where Afresist is based. 

The Proposal Writer will lead the writing of a competitive and compelling proposal working closely with the Afresist Leadership. Based on inputs from the leadership, the Writer will be responsible for writing the technical narrative, accurately capturing the technical approach and project design and components including the budget proposal/costing of the proposal. 

Shortlisted candidates will have demonstrated experience writing winning proposals preferably in the fields of education, entrepreneurship, gender and youth  

Consultant Responsibilities & Duties:

  • Gather and analyze all the available Afresist assessments and information concerning context/problem analysis to ensure required data is readily available 
  • Conduct country (Kenya), technical, and industry research and analysis, including as appropriate in support of proposal writing 
  • Organise remotely at least 4 proposal planning & ideation meetings with Afresist leadership to develop outline and proposal and refine it till satisfaction 
  • Coordinate and seek inputs from Afresist leadership to determine proposal concepts and technical approach and logical framework
  • Draft accurate, responsive, compelling text for Afresist project including background/context, executive summary, technical approach overview, activity components, technical annexes, budgeting etc. as assigned
  • Write first narrative draft in accordance with project design, agreed and articulated during brainstorming and the design workshop with theAfresist team
  • Produce a second draft incorporating Afresist leadership’ feedback;
  • Ensure feedback is coherently integrated into the final draft in alignment with set requirements
  • Regularly communicate progress to Afresist leadership
  • Incorporates win themes and overall technical approach into writing
  • Work with Afresist Leadership to ensure that all relevant proposal content aligns with Afresist organizational values
  • Work with the Afresist designers to develop maps and graphics as needed
  • Collaborate with Afresist Leadership to continuously improve and streamline proposal development process
  • Support the development and maintenance of Afresist’s proposal content library and related documentation to include capability statements, research papers, past performances, management plans, and other related proposal content.

Skills & Qualifications:

  • Experience working with international NGOs
  • Experience with proposal writing within one or more of the sectors outlined above
  • Familiarity with relevant technical areas, including, but not limited to: youth activism, advocacy, development, gender, education etc
  • Past performance as the main writer for at least two (2) successful funding proposals
  • Strong ability to manage time and meet established deadlines
  • Strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and follow-through
  • Flexibility and capacity to collaborate across teams
  • Fluent in English (written and verbal)
  • Excellent oral and written communications skills and demonstrated ability to write and produce documents (proposals, reports) under tight deadlines

Contract Terms

The initial contract will cover one proposal writing project to completion. Terms will be negotiated based on the project and the candidate. The contract will be eligible for renewal based on performance and the needs of the organization.

In this role, the designer will be responsible for managing the design for Afresist multi-project websites ( including Afresist site, Nalafem site, IGAF site etc..) ensuring that our designs are user-friendly, creative, and youth-oriented. The designer will also work with our digital team to expand our presence through the design and implementation of new web-based applications that will positively impact our experience. 

    Duties and Responsibilities

    Under the overall supervision of the Project manager, the designer will lead in the following:

    • Lead the development of the design and communication guideline for Afresist multiple projects
    • Study design briefs and determine requirements
    • Conceptualize visuals based on requirements
    • Create and design various materials for print and digital collateral including multi-media
    • Layout required documents such as reports, papers, journal and toolkits for Afresist projects
    • Work with a wide range of media and use graphic design software
    • Report to the project manager and collaborate with other team members
    • Attend Weekly meeting and as required  
    • Any other tasks as assigned by project manager 

    Qualifications and Skills

    • Have a minimum of 2 years in professional or voluntary design and creative experience
    • Be able to innovate and adapt out of the box
    • Demonstrates integrity and ethical standards
    • Promotes the vision, mission, and strategic goals of the project on women’s rights
    • Proficient in the use of various design software
    • Excellent communication abilities (oral and written)
    • Strong attention to detail
    • Organizational and task management skills
    • Ability to work under pressure 
    • Previous experience working on a design project for an international organisation will be an asset
